Workshops/Choreography

I offer a variety of workshops designed to enrich existing arts curriculums. The programs as they stand, are best suited for high school students, but could also be modified to appeal to younger audiences as well. I find the workshops are most effective when completed over two days, to ensure the students have time to process the material and see their growth and progress. My number one priority when working with students is to develop their confidence. I treat their studio as a sanctuary for them to explore their own creativity, test their limits, and try new things.

I am also available as a guest choreographer for school events and functions, showcases, and school productions.

Here is what one recent client had to say…

“Erin is an energetic and creative leader who quickly gained a strong rapport with students and staff at this year’s summer musical theatre camp as our director and choreographer.

She arrived with a strong vision for our production, but showed flexibility to make changes when necessary. Erin was a pleasure to work with, always making sure everyone felt apart of the team. Always willing to brainstorm and problem solve with staff, she was also excellent at leading group discussions to obtain student input.

Erin had high expectations for the students, and a natural way of challenging them in a positive and respectful manner. Her personal knowledge and experience in acting, dancing, and choreography ensured each students’ personal growth. On top of Directing and Choreographing our production of “Willy Wonka Jr”, Erin also enthusiastically took on the responsibility of creating a new work with the students. Her role of Dramaturge allowed her and the students time to explore and play with ideas, culminating in a new 8 minute one act play.

Erin’s work at the Stabback Music Studio has left a lasting positive impact on our students, and in the staff a desire to work together again.

Thank you, Erin, for all that you gave us this summer!”

WORKSHOPS:

Ideal for arts high school programs looking to enrich existing program.

Musical Theatre (Recommended 2 day workshop)

Musical Theatre is a broad reaching topic that I like to approach from a few different angles. Depending on the class or program, this workshop can be tailored in multiple ways.

  • Acting – This workshop can work well for drama students looking to expand their movement repertoire, while getting a side dose of musical theatre history. We will look critically at intentions, and how to use your acting training to shine in an audition
  • Dance – This workshop is great for dancers looking to add that extra wow factor to their dancing. We often focus so much on technique and forget to ask ourselves why we are doing what we’re doing ? This workshop is great for bringing dancers out of their shell, allowing them to be creative, and getting a dash of musical theatre history on the side.
  • Audition Prep – Geared specifically for those looking to enter the field of musical theatre, we will work on blending together all of the skills required for musical theatre to ensure a well rounded audition both vocally and dance wise. I will provide guidance on appropriate audition material, conduct, attire, and much more!

Contemporary Dance

Contemporary is fast becoming one of the most popular and accessible styles of dance.  It is my passion, and I have been working in this style for many years. It allows students to connect with their emotions and express them through movement. Most importantly, it allows them to tell stories. My focus is to bring out genuine emotions and channel them into storytelling. We will work on stretching, conditioning, technique, and storytelling.

Free Form Improv (Recommended 2 day workshop)

This workshop works best with older students because it requires a fair bit of maturity. We will use a variety of exercises to build up group trust, and establish a safe space to be free and creative. We will use Viewpoints exercises to explore different relationships among their peers, and get them to try new things. I will often ask students to bring in objects, or do some prep work that can be used as inspiration during the workshop. This  workshop can also include musical improv.

This workshop can also be coupled very nicely with the team building workshop.

Group & Team Building (Recommended with Freeform Improv Workshop)

I would recommend this workshop to groups of students who are having difficulties working together. Often you can have too many strong leaders in one group who clash, or too many students who don’t vocalize and share their opinions. This workshop is designed to balance out the group energy and build an ensemble. It works best when followed up with a Freeform Improv workshop.

CHOREOGRAPHY:

Ideal for arts high school programs looking to hire guest choreographers for showcases and events.

Musical Theatre

Oh the endless possibilities! If you are looking to add a piece to a showcase or school event, musical theatre is a great way to go! It can include so many different styles of dance, such as jazz, ballet, tap, contemporary, and sometimes ballroom! You can choose to have live vocals, or lip sync. But it will always be theatrical.

Contemporary

Choreographing Contemporary has been my passion for many years. It allows the dancers to tell beautiful, meaningful stories, that are graceful and beautiful to watch.

Jazz

From Jazz funk fusions, to Fosse, Jazz is timeless and everywhere. From old style, Hollywood jazz, to modern day, hard hitting, dynamic steps, I’m your gal.

Ballet

It is always good to build up a solid foundation in Ballet, and it adds a nice touch when rounding out a showcase. It’s a style that we don’t see as often anymore, in favour of the flashier styles, but it is no less important!
